Announcing the release of JPEGView 3.0 ╤ September 1, 1993
Enclosed is version 3.0 of my postcardware application JPEGView, a fast, flexible JPEG, PICT, and GIF viewer for the Macintosh. This latest release adds a number of substantial new features, including full AppleScript support, new high-quality dithering routines, a greatly improved slide show, floating windows, and much much more!
IMPORTANT NOTE: JPEGView *requires* System 7.0 or later *and* any version of
QuickTime to run. The latest version of the QuickTime extension (1.6.1) can be found
via anonymous FTP at ftp.apple.com in the /dts/mac/sys.soft/quicktime directory.
New with version 3.0 is the option to become a fully registered JPEGView user. To register, send US$20 (or US$15 if you've already sent me a postcard) to me and I will send you back a printed, bound JPEGView manual together with an official JPEGView 3.0 release disk containing some of my favorite JPEG images. Full details are given in the on-line help (available from the help (a.k.a. "balloon") menu).
Please note that registration is optional; individual use of JPEGView obligates you only to send me a postcard.
Briefly, here are the important new features in version 3.0:
Ñ full AppleEvent support, allowing scripting and recording with AppleScript
Ñ new dithering routines for better image quality on displays with at least 256 colors
Ñ floating windows showing image statistics, colors, and comments
Ñ vastly improved slide show functionality, including offscreen rendering
Ñ extensions to QuickTime to allow the display of JPEG/JFIF thumbnail images
Ñ support for creating custom icons when saving images
Ñ more time given to background applications during image decompression
Ñ looser restrictions on full-screen images, allowing selections to be made
Ñ better balloon help and freshly-updated on-line help
Ñ many, many other minor user interface improvements
And a general JPEGView overview:
Ñ it's free (well, postcardware), simple, and easy to use
Ñ requires only 600k, but will effectively use more memory to run faster
Ñ produces some of the highest-quality images available on the Macintosh
Ñ provides an excellent user-configurable slide show
Ñ automatically scales images to fit on your monitor
Ñ has handy full screen windows (without the menubar) for large images
Ñ supports multiple-monitor systems extremely well
Ñ includes exhaustive on-line documentation and balloon help
Ñ is System 7-studly, featuring full AppleScript support and 32-bit cleanliness
Ñ comes with a cool colorful JPEG test image :-)
Once again:
JPEGView is postcardware. The concept is simple:
If you like it, you are obligated to send me a postcard of some sort.
If you want a printed, bound manual and official release disk, register by sending in
